Building Support Systems

Systems are the critical component for the equipping process to function effectively. At the same time as a church begins to embrace equipping values and as a new vision for an Ephesians 4 ministry is articulated and a new culture is birthed, it is essential to develop an infrastructure to support these changing dynamics. Building these supportive systems takes time and effort. Because of this, preparation of this component must run concurrently with the other stages. Then as an increasing awareness of the potentials for spiritual maturity grow and the congregation develops an increased value for living out their biblical mandate for ministry, and as more people begin to be drawn into the church, the supportive structure will be ready to move into place.

Some of the elements that comprise a support system are:

  • Assimilating new members and new believers into the church family so that they feel needed and valued. This element may include welcoming new guests, follow-up guest visits, new member classes, and involvement in small group ministries.
  • Providing the biblical foundations for ministry and for educating newcomers who need to understand Bible basics.
  • Discovering each individual's personal needs for ministry; their faith journeys and life experiences; and their talents, passions, and spiritual gifts that can be used in ministry.
  • Matching their gifts, passions and personal styles to ministries that will allow them to grow spiritually.
  • Training people for the ministry and having follow-up evaluations and affirmations to assure each will be successful in ministry.
  • Recognizing and reflecting on people's experiences in ministry.
  • An Equipping Management System with detailed information tracking for each person as they move through phases of ministry.
  • Prayer support that bathes the equipping ministry process, the ministries, and those in active ministry in prayer.

During the preparation for this component, time will be spent working with the staff and ministry leaders to determine what existing functions can be folded in with these new systems, which will need to be strengthened and what components will have to be created . On-site time will be used to present and define the processes, to train the staff, ministry leaders and the congregation in building an intentional but invisible system that works for the individual congregation, and in facilitating the changes that are necessary.
